Director of Education

George M. Schwartz

Mr. Schwartz began his career in the wine industry during college while on a junior year abroad when he travelled extensively throughout Europe and learned about its wines.
On his return, while finishing college, Schwartz worked for the State Liquor commission in Portsmouth, NH and learned the art of merchandising.
After college, Mr. Schwartz began working in retail wine sales in Cambridge at Savenor’s, a small but prestigious food and wine shop best known as being the purveyor to Julia Child.
Schwartz then went to Martignetti’s, Boston’s largest wine retailer, as manager of the wine department and regional team—a position that allowed him to deepen his knowledge of wine and provided him a highly visible platform as an educator.
Schwartz became wine director of the Boston-based Legal Seafoods,a well-known national chain of seafood restaurants owned by the Berkowitz family.
At Legal’s, Schwartz gained kudos for successfully stylizing innovative wine lists and advancing volumetric house wine programs.
The Berkowitz family created a wholesale wine import business and recruited Mr. Schwartz to serve as Vice President of Sales.

Schwartz oversaw the growing portfolio and gained a reputation for finding excellent vintners from California, as well as Germany, Spain and Italy.
In 1990, Mr. Schwartz joined Winebow, Inc. as regional manager of the Italian portfolio for New England where he was charged with working with distributors and their staffs for appreciation and sales. His style and stature brought the awareness of Italian wines to a new level in the New England market.
Mr. Schwartz is a member of the Society of Wine Educators, has been a featured educator at the Boston Wine Expos, the Nantucket Wine Festival, worked with the Italian Trade Commission for trade development in Boston, was awarded the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence.
Mr. Schwartz serves as a guest expert to the media, is a featured speaker at many specialized dinners with producers and has also served as featured speaker at the Boston Globe Wine Luncheon with Anthony Spinnazola.
A pure Bostonian with no accent, Schwartz is a native of Chelsea by the Sea. He is a graduate of University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH. His current ancillary passion is grappa and its family, and he imports his own line of grappas and a liqueur from Sicily. His interests span the gamut of hiking, jazz, cooking, cheese mongering, photography, writing, biking and badminton. He resides currently in the village of Sheldonville, Massachusetts.
