The D.O.C.G. category is reserved for wines of particularly high quality which must meet the following requirements, in addition to those laid down in the D.O.C. norms:

They must be sold in containers not larger than 5 litres (1.3 U.S. gallons).


They must undergo chemical analysis and be tasted and approved as they are bottled.


They must bear the goverment seal, which must be attached in such a way that the bottle can not be opened without it being broken.


The label carries the same wording as that required for a D.O.C. wine, except that the term "Denominazione d'Origine Controllata e Garantita" must be written in full.
